Pedestrian Gateway Bridge
$230 million Gateway Project
165,000 cu yd of concrete containing Holcim Alpena Plant Type I portland cement and South Chicago NewCem slag cement was utilized as MaxCem in the reconstruction of 2.5 miles of the I-75 and I-96 freeways, along with 23 ramps, 29 bridges and 3 miles of cast-in-place concrete retaining walls. MaxCem, a product within the Envirocore Cements portfolio of cements.
Moreover, for the first time in Michigan, cement kiln dust (CKD) [Alpena Plant] was used to stabilize the roadways’ high-clay soil subgrade.
$7 million cable-stayed Pedestrian Gateway Bridge was built. It spans 407 ft across I-96 and I-75 and rises 150 ft from the freeway floor.
The Bridge contains a 150-ft concrete pylon.
6000 psi High Performance Concrete (HPC) mix was specified for the cast-in-place pylon. It was produced with Holcim’s TerCem a product within the Envirocore Cements portfolio of cements. This is a precisely formulated blend of portland cement (71%), granulated blast furnace slag (25%) and silica fume (4%)
