FAQ
Alpena Frequently Asked Questions
What does the Amrize Alpena plant make?
Cement, including Portland cement and Amrize OneCem, a lower-carbon alternative. Cement is the binding ingredient in concrete.
Is Amrize Alpena cement made in the USA?
Yes. Our cement is produced in Alpena, Michigan, by a local workforce and shipped by vessel to customers across the region through our unparalleled distribution network
How long has the plant been operating?
Since 1907, the plant has been supplying the built environment with solutions that shape the foundation of our infrastructure, and shared landscapes.
How much cement does the plant produce?
The plant can produce up to 2.4 million metric tons of cement per year, making it one of the largest in North America.
Where does Alpena cement go?
A majority of Amrize Alpena product is distributed by vessel across the Great Lakes to our cement terminals throughout the Midwest and Ontario. It's used in roads, bridges, buildings and landmarks like the Gordie Howe International Bridge and Ford Field.
What's the difference between cement and concrete?
Cement is a powder-like ingredient that is the ultimate binding agent used to create concrete. When you combine cement, sand, water and aggregates–or rocks– it forms a paste that gets poured onto roads, sidewalks, bridges and more. That final end-product is what’s known as concrete and it’s what we walk on and drive on.
What is Amrize doing to reduce its environmental impact?
The plant runs a 25-megawatt solar array and a waste heat recovery system, uses alternative fuels, produces lower-carbon OneCem, and has invested more than $100 million in environmental technology over 15 years.
How many people work at the plant?
More than 3000 employees, most of whom live in Alpena and surrounding communities. The plant also indirectly supports other industries such as transportation, and maritime.
